Most popular video games of all time

There are many video games out there that have attained the title of "popular," throughout the years. Many of the games have been praised by mainstream consumer and those who identify themselves as hardcore gamers alike. Are all of the games that will go down in the annals of video game history deserving of such esteem? Probably not, at least not by the standards put in place by the gaming public these days. However, that does not change the fact that many of the games that will be remembered with such enthusiasm were loved by games nonetheless. Here, we attempt to form a list of the video games that were not only extremely popular, but the ones that have actually earned their place among the titans of video gaming.

10. Sonic the Hedgehog - Here he is, Sega's answer to Mario. All of your cute animal friends have been turned into maniacal robots by the scheming Dr. Robotnik, and it is up to you, a super-fast blue hedgehog, to save them. Many will fondly remember being thrown into the colorful world of Sonic, attempting to collect as many golden rings and chaos emeralds as possible, all the while avoiding the onslaught of creative enemies and keeping an eye out for well hidden power-ups. These days, Sonic seems to have fallen off the bandwagon, at least according to the media, but he still has many die-hard fans determined to stick with their blue hero until the end.

9. Resident Evil series - The survival/horror series that took the world by storm. The Resident Evil series is one that has consistently high ratings on review sites and magazines alike (not counting the ones in the cannon that strayed from the RE formula; those, unsurprisingly, did not rate as well). Not many horror games can hope to hold a candle to the gripping stories and gameplay that belong to the Resident Evil games, as they were some of the first to grab gamers by the collar and not let go until we were seriously terrified.

8. Chrono Trigger - This may be a lesser known game to most new gamers, but in the heyday of the Super Nintendo, this was the RPG to play. You play as Crono, a young boy living in the year 1000 A.D., who is flung into the future and witnesses the end of the world (which, according to the game, occurs in 1999 A.D.). What follows is a massive adventure through time, attempting to stop the fiery destruction of civilization on earth, recruiting warriors to your cause along the way. With its remarkable plot twists and excellent story, it is regarded as one of the best
