Some people never retire, no matter how old they are. To them, to retire from life is to pass away. On the other hand, there are those people who have reached the legal age and/or the age within a society that normally expects, so called, senior citizens to at last give up their primary means of earning a living and hopefully enjoy the remaining years of their life as a retired person.
However, there is a certain percentage of people who enjoy and/or receive a great deal of pleasure and/or satisfaction by continuing to work as they have for most of their life. As long as they can, they will continue to do so, no matter what social and/or legal standards within the society now apply to them.
You can also ask yourself just how much more money do you require, in order to be reasonably secure and able to enjoy those other interests that life and the World has to offer to you. You cannot buy your way into the Hereafter. Then again, your wife, children and/or grandchildren will forever remember that your eventual death provided to them a whole lot of property, real and/or tangible, that they would otherwise not have.
As old as you are, perhaps now is the time to determine just how much you have and how much you require each year, in order to fully enjoy the last years of your life. In so doing, how much will the sum total of your savings, pension, Social Security payments and investments earn for you each year? Can you remain alive and well with what you will receive? If so, maybe it is time to tell your boos that you will quit your job of so many years and just take it easy afterward.
It is true that the expense to commute to work each working day is gone forever. Then again, most of those monthly living expenses must be paid in a timely manner, including your utility expense, health insurance, home insurance, vehicle insurance and the fact that you have to eat and maybe you would like to enjoy a traveling vacation and/or some other form of paid entertainment.
It is also true that many people acquire one or more interesting hobbies, in which to fill each day. Some people also go back to school and/or spend a great deal of time within a library, in which to learn about those subjects that they enjoy but did not have the time to learn about because earning a living was the right and the proper thing to do.
No matter how you wish to live the rest of your life, you should be free of financial worry, while allowing you to also remain as healthy and as happy as you can be. For some of us, just seeing the dawn of a new day provides no better reason to go on living. Just ask yourself: "How best can I live for the rest of my life?" When you have that answer you can then decide if you truly do want to retire from the workforce and just enjoy the rest of your life.
