I had three children while still in my twenties. I won't lie, there are certainly some advantages to having children young. I am still full of energy, it is easier for me to miss sleep than many of the older moms I know, and I will have more time to explore my own life when the kids are older and on their own. Yet there are also some distinct disadvantages as well.
With youth often comes lack of experience and naivety. I jumped into motherhood not knowing half of what the older moms already knew, my personal experience with babies and young children was limited to what I had grazed from television and the occasional teen pregnancy. For many young mothers I would expect it may be similar. Coupled with the remains of that teenage invincibility and there stands a possible powder keg of reality about to go off.
People in their twenties often are not yet sure of what they want out of life yet. Many change collage majors two or three times, change jobs several times, all the while exploring who they really are and what this life can bring them. This kind of needed self-exploration is difficult with an infant or young child in tow. Making sudden changes no longer affects just you, there is now a very helpless child to be considered. Will a job change mean no health insurance for several months? Will a major change mean college will take longer to complete? Will starting over again mean living on Ramen noodles for a while? While these might be acceptable for a time as a single adult, with children that need care and nutrition it can be completely irresponsible.
Many people in their twenties are also still enjoying their youth. Going out, being spontaneous, and having fun can be quickly hindered by having a young child on your side. This can become even more depressing if you see other friends and peers having adventures that you are unable to have. Babysitters and nannies come at a steep price, both monetarily and emotionally.
The choice to have children is a personal one. No one really knows if you are ready except you. Young people who are considering having children need to take time to examine all of the advantages as well as the disadvantages and discover if now is the right time for you. If you're just not sure, start with a puppy.
