Tips for traveling to Anguilla, British West Indies, Caribbean Sea

Travelling to Anguilla, British West Indies, is well worth the effort!

From England the easiest way to travel to Anguilla, the northernmost Leeward Island, is either with Air France via Paris or with KLM via Amsterdam.

Both of these routes leave London Heathrow early in the morning, and leave their hubs at about 11 am local time. The approximately nine hour flight takes you to Princess Julianna airport, St Maarten, the Dutch side of St Martin, shared with France. This island is just five miles from the island of Anguilla and is the nearest large international airport.

You then have a choice as to how to get to Anguilla. You can either try for a Winair connection, tight if your flight is delayed as the last Winair leaves for Anguilla at just after four in the afternoon. It takes just seven minutes to reach Wallblake airport on Anguilla. Or you can take a ferry either from Julianna airport direct to Anguilla or from Marigot, on the French side, where there is a commercial ferry service to Blowing Point, the main passenger port for Anguilla. The ferry will take about 18 minutes from Marigot and will cost $15 US at current prices, slightly longer from the airport and will cost $35 US.

There are also two routes via Antigua for the intrepid traveller which will eventually get you to Anguilla. London Gatwick to Antigua with either British Airways or Virgin Atlantic is a well established route to the Caribbean. The problem with these airlines when using them to go to Anguilla are the cost, considerably higher than with Air France and KLM, and the connections. There are flights which on paper will get you to Anguilla the same day but, in practice, one will normally have to prepare for a night's layover in St Johns while waiting for the morning flight out. This is because Liat which runs the scheduled connection frequently cancels the flight through lack of enough passengers. Liat, which has very recently merged with Caribbean Star, has a variety of well earned nicknames, amongst the most printable are Late if at all' and Luggage in another territory' and so it is up to the reader if they want to chance it with this route.

For those that like flying and long connection times waiting in airports there is always the route via America direct to Wallblake airport, Anguilla. From most UK airports it is possible to get to the US. There is a flight from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico and then from San Juan to Anguilla but this is a long route and is not for the faint hearted.
