Exercises that burn the most calories

by Makoy

The calories burned during exercise is affected and highly dependent on one's weight, intensity of work out, conditioning level, and metabolism. There are two general ways of calculating the amount of calories burned. First is either to measure the amount of calories burned in a specific activity and second, the amount of calories burned in an hour. There are thousands of different exercise variations and each of which has different effects. Generally, there are some exercises that are considered as the ultimate fat busters or calorie burning activities. Here are the top 5 activities that can burn the most calories roughly estimated for a 190 lbs, 155 lbs, and 130 lbs man.

1.) Running - Running is considered as one of the best cardiovascular exercises. For a 190 lbs man, running for 10.9 miles per hour (5.5 minutes per mile) would roughly burn about 1553 calories in an hour. For a 155 lbs man, it would burn about 1267 calories in an hour, while for a 130 lbs man, it would burn about 1062 calories in an hour. The amount of calories burned would depend on the intensity of the activity though. Running at a slower pace would also decrease the amount of calories burned. For example, running for 5.2 miles an hour (11.5 minutes a mile) would only burn 776 calories for a 190 lbs man, 633 calories for a 155 lbs man, and only 531 calories for a 130 lbs man. Even though the level of intensity is decreased, the amount of calories burned in running is still a very significant amount and if done consistently, it will contribute greatly to weight loss.

2.) Cycling - Bicycling for a little less than 20 miles an hour would burn about 1380 calories for a 190 lbs man, 1126 calories for a 155 lbs man, and 944 calories for a 130 lbs man. Though the numbers are rough estimates as the level of intensity would greatly affect the amount of calories burned, cycling is still considered as one of the best ways to burn calories. It ranked 2nd to running though since it would require more equipment than running yet both are offering a close figures in numbers of calories burned.

3.) Swimming - This is considered as the best overall exercise/work out one can get. The calories burned in swimming would depend on the stroke. The butterfly stroke burns the most calories. A 190 lbs man doing general butterfly stroke for an hour burns about 949 calories, while a 155 lbs and 130 lbs man burns 774 and 649 calories an hour. Swimming laps doing freestyle for an hour on a fast and vigorous pace burns 863 calories for a 190 lbs man, 704 calories for a 155 lbs man, and 590 calories for a 130 lbs man.

4.) Martial arts - Traditional martial arts like Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and kick boxing are great fat busters and calorie burning activities too. In general, a 190 lbs doing a normal training would burn about 863 calories in an hour and for a 155 lbs and 130 lbs, each would burn 704 and 590 calories respectively. Just like in any other activities, the amount of calories burned would increase once the level of intensity and frequency would increase. Though not really considered as a martial art, boxing burns more calories. Competitive boxing in the ring would burn about 1035, 844, and 708 calories for a 190 lbs, 155 lbs, and 130 lbs man.

5.) Rock climbing - Rock climbing in an ascending rock would burn about 949 calories for a 190 lbs man, 774 calories for a 155 lbs man, and 649 calories for a 130 man and all depending on the difficulty of the climb. Considered as an extreme sport, rock climbing is a great way to burn calories since even rapelling burns about not less than 470 calories. The great thing about rock climbing? It utilizes a lot of upper body strength which helps more in burning calories.

Other high calorie burning activities are rope skipping/jumping, skiing, squash, jai alai, and canoeing.
