Poetry: The path of compassion

A Love Story

I can feel your love
Through that cruel exterior
I choose to be your friend
Despite your sins

At first it hurt like a knife
To my gut, but I felt
Behind your hardness
You too was hurting

Hurting from a painful past
I know nothing about
My heart went out to you
Wanting to erase the memories

Memories high jacking your sleep
Attacking your wakefulness
Like a angel in the night
I come to you

I've grown numb to your attacks
Less sensitive to your cruel intent
For the sake of your heart
I take the blows

I can do nothing
To change the past, but
Hope to be there
When you need me

I've been hurt continue to be grieved
Helping others make me rejoice
Being there for you
I forget my own demise

Gaining a friend for a lifetime
Where I thought none exists
Receiving love and respect, I delight
In its comfort otherwise unknown

Our heart travel to utopia
Over wide open seas
Across poetic time
To saturate the earth
