Going back to class as an adult learner can cause enough anxiety without having to worry about what to wear. So, to ease the tension of this re-entry, here are some tips for how to dress for class.
1. Find out if the school has a dress and appearance standard. Most schools have some sort of dress and appearance standard, whether it's no profanity, graphic tees, or flip-flops. But some do not. In either case, it's important to find out if your school does. The easiest way to find out is in the student catalog or online student services. Don't rely on what other "helpful" students may tell you. Get the answer straight from the source.
2. Your class may determine your dress. The type of class you are attending may determine how you dress. For example, if you are enrolled in business courses, particularly an MBA program, you may be required to wear business or business casual attire. If it is a physical education class, you may be required to wear tennis shoes and athletic attire. For a lab class, closed-toe shoes and long sleeve shirts may be needed. Look for class-specific dress information when you enroll or when class begins.
3. Dress for the weather. Obviously, you will dress differently in the spring than in the winter. So, be smart and know what the weather will be in advance. Also, for low-lying areas where flooding could occur, a good set of rubber boots may be necessary. Know your environment and be prepared for the weather.
4. Comfort is king. Being comfortable is probably one of the most important aspects of dress. You may already be hesitant or nervous, so wear comfortable clothes. The last thing you want is to be nervous in pants that are too tight. Gauge the temperature of the classroom, too. Some classes may be too warm or too cold for you, so adjust your clothing appropriately.
5. Don't be distracting. Be considerate of others and don't distract your fellow classmates from your professor. We have all seen and known those kinds of people. They are the ones that wear the pastels and hot pink shirts with lime green shorts. There are some fashions that are better left alone. Also, don't go heavy on the perfume or cologne. This can distract and even irritate those around you.
6. Neat and clean is always "in". No matter what the time of year, weather, fashion trend or circumstance, dressing neatly and having good hygiene practices always goes a long way. You can never go wrong by being neat and clean.
Dressing for class can cause worry and distress or it can be a fun experience. Regardless of how you view it, these tips can help you assess what to wear and what not to wear. The last thing you need to worry about is what you have on when you are trying to gain new knowledge and further your education.
