"With the first pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Clippers select... Blake Griffin from the University of Oklahoma"(David Stern sure polished this up!)
So, when we say the NBA 2009, what do we think of. We think of the off-season, the contenders, and of course the players who could win the MVP (and much more..). However, we usually tend to lay off of the new rookies, especially those flying under the radar of news journalists.
Last year, Derrick Rose made the Boston Celtics fight for their playoff life to move on to the next round. He really showed during the time span why he was chosen #1. However, he wasn't the only one that impressed us last year. Other players like O.J Mayo, Russell Westbrook, Mareese Speights have shown they belonged to the NBA as well.
So what does this year's talent bring to the table? Tons. You've got athleticism, shooters, slashers, post-up players, big boys, and play makers, all tied up into one.
We all know Blake Griffin is going to deliver. But who else? Here's my top 3 rookies of the NBA Draft that can surprise you this year.
1. DeMar DeRozan - Toronto Raptors
Coming from Toronto, I had to make him #1. So, when you think of DeMar, what do you think? First thing that comes up is his athleticism. He can jump real high, but he's real raw. That's what makes him so underrated. He has the talent, but he's not polished up like a Chris Bosh or Kevin Durant. This year, look to see his leaping ability, (cause that's what the Raps lacked), his defense and his mid-range game. Watch to see him blossom as the year progresses.
2. DeJuan Blair - San Antonio Spurs
Why was this guy in the second round? Come on. If you think about it, he's like a raw Dwight Howard, except a little bit shorter. I mean, he blocks shots, he can create some things down low and he's just a beast. Period. He's been bitten by the injury bug a lot, but that won't stop his drive for this season. Look for him to become like a very raw LeBron, if he gets the minutes. Watch out 2nd unit's of the NBA, DeJuan's coming to your town soon.
3. Tyler Hansbrough - Indiana Pacers
If you go 1-on-1 with this man, you'd be quite surprised if he didn't score on you. I mean his work ethic is what makes him real good. Watch it sometime. Also, what about his offensive skill? He has the athletic ability, he can dunk on you, and he can hit short to mid range jump shots. All he needs know is to work on his mid-range game a little bit more, and you might see a raw Pau Gasol in the works. Look for him to surprise you.
So there you go. You're top 3 NBA Rookies that you should watch.
