Poetry: Protection

by Mary Guimont

I see the tears fall softly down upon your face

And my own heart begins to break.

I want to protect you and keep you safe.

From life's pain and heartache.

But in order to laugh you have to cry.

In order to live you have to die.

The happiness and laughter children know

Does not last as they grow.

The happiness you have today

Is gone tomorrow

it is not yours to keep

but only to borrow.

I can not protect you from the pain

As the seasons of your life take change.

But I can lend a hand, a shoulder

And be your friend.

Nourish your soul

until your heart mends
