Hong Kong Dream or Reality
Shortly after entering the streets of Hong Kong, the clashing of footsteps on the pavement and the blaring of car horns set the tone of the fast-paced Hong Kong lifestyle. But to truly capture the essence of this vibrant city with a combination of western influence and Asian culture, one would have to pause for a moment in order to notice all its subtle nuisances.
Known for its busy harbor and captivating night scenes, Hong Kong does not disappoint in either area. Take a climb up the The Peak Mountain and see a breathtaking view of the entire city lit up brighter than a million stars. Upon gazing a visually mesmerizing site like this, an observer quickly becomes enthralled in a city that seems more fantasy than reality. Even an ordinary tourist photo becomes transformed into the cover of a movie poster with this glittering nightscape as the background.
Food lovers also get their share of sensory satisfaction as Hong Kong offers cuisines representing countries from all over the world as well as some of the most delectable deserts only sold on the streets. Among the smorgasbord of treats available in Hong Kong, only one item garners such a loyal following of fans. This, of course, is one of Hong Kong's most famous deserts known as waffle bites. Anxious fans wait patiently sometimes for half an hour for the chance to savor these tasty morsels.
But the main pulse of Hong Kong lies on the streets! Just walk down any street to experience the upbeat spirit of fashion as run-way shows and music thumping from retail stores consumes the streets. Many Hong Kong natives are already familiar with this scene but to the Hong Kong first timer, it's an almost overwhelming experience on the number of choices and styles available on one block. In the main shopping district area, for example, it's not unusual to see over 40 stores spanning several streets devoted simply to footwear.
Another unique symbol of Hong Kong is its numerous means of transportation. There are a number of ferries that allow access to one of Hong Kong's many surrounding islands. These ferries offer an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city to enjoy lush mountains and soothing seaside. While riding the ferry and starring out the open window as the cool sea air brushes across a person's face, one can't help but to be put at sheer ease and relaxation. Riding upon a cable car 200 meters above the ground offers a serene view of a city that is anything but laid back.
However, there are rare occasions when the streets lie silent as people pour into Happy Trails horse racing track a couple times a week. Quiet chatter fills the stands prior to the race as the horses are paraded out while several large projection screens capture all the action. But as soon as the bell rings, the announcer's commentary on the loud speaker is drowned out by hundreds of people shaking their fists and screaming at the horses building into a frenzy until the moment when the horses dart across the finish line and the crowd goes quiet.
Hong Kong has all the characteristics of a large population city with simplicities and tastes all its own. It's a truly dynamic environment that requires multiple visits in order to fully experience all that is Hong Kong.
