The nonmusical benefits of a good music education

Created on: August 20, 2009

Music has been a great source of entertainment for millions of people around the world. People are in awe of musicians and singers, and children grow up wanting to be like their favorite singers. But the value of music beyond the scope of sheer entertainment cannot be underestimated. The benefits of music are far reaching and can add new meaning and value to life.

Below are a few benefits of a good music education.

1. Music helps to enhance intelligence - Research has shown that music increases intelligence by up to 33%. Music helps to develop the right and left side of the brain, and can aid in logical thinking.

2. Music develops motor co-ordination, especially learning a musical instrument. Playing an instrument helps to develop eye-hand co-ordination, cor-ordination between both hands, and also between hands and feet. It helps in strengthening muscles and also the overall "rhythm" of the body. The pulse of a piece of music is closely related to the pulse of the heart, and can help in calming a person down when stress levels are high.

3. Music gives a sense of belonging especially when a child rehearses and performs with other children. A peer group that spends time rehearsing and performing can give a child a strong feeling of bonding with others who have a similar interest in music. This is very important as a child reaching his adolescent years and grows up in the world of peer pressure and the need to conform to the world's standards.

4. Music develops self esteem and builds confidence - children who are not academically smart tend to focus on music and the arts. It helps them develop confidence in their musical ability and also builds up their own self esteem. They can look beyond the school classroom for avenues to develop their personality and have a sense of achievement which is also very crucial in the growing up years of a child.

5. Teaching music can earn money. Even for a teenager who teaches music on a part time basis, it can be a great source of income. With the high demand for music lessons, it becomes a good way to spend time, and also benefits the students. Teaching music can also help crystallize all that the "teacher" (the teenager) has learned.

Although the above list is not exhaustive, the few points given are very valid benefits that a good music education can give a child. It should not be underestimated while planning the school curriculum.
