Poetry: Struggle

by James Lyons

Created on: August 19, 2009

Shipwrecked.

That blood is thicker than water
Has never held meaning for me
Those family ties that I hear of
Just a breeze passing high through the trees

Once grand and majestic this vessel
Now broken and rotting on shore
My friends could just watch as I wrestled
The waves as they toyed with my oar

Does this pain count its origins elsewhere?
Is its genesis beneath my skin?
What can a man find more challenging
Than searching his soul deep within?

And so I decide to depart on this venture
Expose my fears to the unknown
If the goal is much more than to find what I seek
This explorer must not trek alone

Yet who can be trusted for such an adventure
To conquer this ocean, so deadly a sea
To manage the storms that are surely to follow
Does a person exist who will answer my plea?

While many apply, lining up on the shore
One by one they depart when they hear
That the pay may not be what they anticipated
No, they may be asked to pay dear

On down the line, one by one they retreat
Till she stood there alone on the sand
I will help you to navigate those stormy waters
If you'll have me, then held out her hand
