Basics of maternity clothes

When you first find out you're pregnant, thoughts of little onesies and booties usually are the type of clothing that come to mom-to-be's mind. Hold on, mom. You're going to need to think about some other clothes before you get to buying Baby any outfits; something that's going to fit you! As your baby develops, your body will grow as well, making those favorite jeans tighter and tighter until finally about 3 to 4 months into your pregnancy they simply won't fit.

To avoid being left without clothes when your body decides your old wardrobe simply won't cut it, it's a good idea to head to a maternity store at around the start of your third month. Trying to buy a little time by stealing Dad-to-be's clothes might seem like a possible good plan- but he probably won't be too keen on the idea. Most stores provide a maternity pillow that you can strap around your budding belly to see how clothes will look and sit in the coming months. The staff at maternity stores are all very knowledgeable of their stock; ask questions! The more comfortable you feel shopping, the more comfortable you'll feel in the clothes.

So what should you be buying? There are a few things to consider. When are you due? What seasons are you going to be needing clothes for? Are there any vacation plans for during your pregnancy? Does your job have a certain dress code? Most importantly, what fits your style?

Maternity jeans are actually quite comfortable, for both you and developing baby. There are many different styles of belly bands for you to try, most of which are also found on other styles of pants if you need them; shorts, capris, work slacks, etc. Once you find a belly band style that you like, be sure to try on the other pants with the same band. Sometimes the cut can be a little different, just like regular pants. Comfort in one style may be frustration in another! A few pairs of jeans and a couple of dress pants (or more, if needed by your workplace) are a great basic start to your mommy closet.

Now for the upper half! Just like the numerous styles of belly bands, there are lots of different styles of shirts to leave you comfy. Keep in mind the months toward the end of your pregnancy; just because you're buying your clothes in the middle of August doesn't mean you should be buying FOR August. Plan ahead. If baby is due in March, have a number of warmer shirts to get you through winter, as well as some comfy mommy PJ's.

Don't forget about underneath. Those favorite undies aren't going to accommodate well for your growing belly. Maternity stores have you covered there as well. Most stock styles that every mom can be happy with- yes, even thongs. Fabrics range from cotton to a Lycra mix, so you'll be sure to find something comfy. You'll also want to look into sleep bras. Your body is changing, so the added support at night could really help you out. Don't worry about nursing bras right now. Those are suggested to look into towards the end of your pregnancy; about 3 weeks before your due date so you know that they will fit perfectly when you really need them.

Maternity clothes has changed over the last twenty years. The polka dots, stripes, and cheesy t-shirts of the 80's have been replaced with clothes that are comparable to fashions found at the Gap and Old Navy. If you've been afraid you'll be stuck in sweatpants and baggy tees your entire pregnancy, have hope! You can find clothes that are not only comfy, but pretty too!
