Grants for college students and how to get them

by Paul Marr

Created on: August 19, 2009

Grants for college students are really helpful when they are on a tight budget. They have helped me through Hartnell College education. Now there is a Associates degree Transfer Studies in my back round. The grants are what got me through to a degree without them I wouldn't have a degree. Through the graduation period I received many Pell Distribution Grants which comes from the government's budget. Each semester I received about three grants. Except for the Summer semester. Two were for Tuition fees and books the last one was for mainly school supplies. Financial aid would send one grant in the early weeks of the semester and the last two would not be mailed to me until the late weeks of the semester. The reason why they did that was because most college students would not finish their classes and would end up just taking the money and leaving school. When this happened Financial aid would possibly charge the student. This was known to happen at the Hartnell community College in Salinas, California. So they would not send out all the Pell grants at once. The grants are usually enough to get any school supplies such as a computer desk, computer , even a laptop if necessary, pencils, papers etc. So grants are really helpful and allow the student to buy whatever they need to help them get their degree or any certificate they wished to receive. As long as they complete their classes. Grants are really helpful to families who are on SSI (Social Security Insurance) as long as the family is going to school. The grants that are used by these families are usually enough to get by their tight budget each month. Grants are really helpful with food needs and shelter, and for others who are on a tight budget.

The best way to receive grants is through financial aid which is usually offered in most Colleges and Universities. The process to apply for financial aid is kind of a long process, but is really worth it. There is usually three steps (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) but, sometimes requires extra steps. First thing to do is get a pin number and then that number can be used to sign the FAFSA form. This is a recommended first step. Then the student will have to get the required documents which is extra work before filling out the form and is recommended ahead of time. Once the student has the papers and documents then they could start. Once they start they're multiple steps to follow it takes some extra time to refer to the documents. All these steps
