Tips for Getting Good Grades in Jr. and Sr. High School:
I have been teaching for 13 years, I graduated from high school with good grades and I graduated from College and Grad School with good grades. The following tips were handed down to me from wise individuals that were also successful in high school and college. You don't necessarily have to be the smartest kid in school to get straight A's. Most of the time it comes down to the following tips that can make a huge difference in average grades or above average grades. Put these up on your wall, live by them and reap the benefits of them:
IT'S NOT ALWAYS WHAT YOU DO, BUT IT IS HOW YOU DO IT
Do things with a smile. I wanted good grades and I knew that it was crucial to get my teacher on my side from day one. Approach your teacher with a smile and be friendly. You want every single odd in your favor and if you can get him or her on your side, you win 90% of the battle.
Don't be negative. Offer your time whenever possible. Be likeable. Don't say negative, bad or vulgar things in class. Teachers pick up on all of this whether you think it is right or not and it affects the way they perceive you.
GET TO KNOW YOUR TEACHER:
The more you know about your teacher the better you will be able to focus your time on the things he or she wants you to learn. This way you won't spend worthless energy. One of the biggest things that I wanted to know about my teacher was where the questions for the tests were going to come from. Were they going to come from the book? Were they going to come from the lecture? Were they going to come from a combination of both? Once I knew where the questions for the test were going to come from I knew where to focus my energy. If the questions came from the lectures I made sure I took good strong quality notes and that is what I studied. I didn't waste my time in the book because it was fruitless. If they were going to come from the book, I focused most or all of my energy on the book.
The next important question to ask is where are the points going to come from? Will they come from homework? Will they come from your notebook or journal? Will they come from tests? Will they come from worksheets? If you know where the points are going to come from you can focus your energy and time on those areas.
SIT WITH A PURPOSE, SHOW YOU CARE:
There have been numerous studies that have shown that students who sit in the front or toward the front of class are more
