Herbal teas: Kava

Created on: August 19, 2009

Kava is the only herb for anxiety that is 100 percent recommended by MedlinePlus, a joint project between the U.S. National Library of Science and the National Institutes of Health. Some clinical studies have proved that kava has similar properties to the chemicals in prescription anxiety drugs. Kava (also known as kava kava) is completely natural and is not habit-forming. This makes kava a good choice for people who need help with anxiety but simply do not want to take prescription drugs. Drinking kava tea is an especially good way to enjoy the anti-anxiety properties of kava, because the hot water will also work to soothe frazzled nerves.

Using kava for anxiety is probably the best and safest herbal remedy for those suffering from anxiety symptoms. These symptoms include excessive stress, panic attacks, night terrors, insomnia, sweating, stomach pains and nervousness.

According to MedlinePlus, you can take between 50 to 280 milligrams of kava lactones daily for use to ease anxiety. Some studies have been for doses of 800 milligrams daily, but these have not been long-term studies, so the safety is not known.

Kava is made from the dried roots of an herbal plant. The best kava teas are made from freshly dried herbs. You can also drink kava tea infusions that are made from kava extract. You can make kava tea yourself, by simply buying kava herbs and brewing it with hot water. There are also ready-made kava teas that can be bought at any supermarket or specialty store.

There is also a growing number of cold kava beverages that can be found at most health food stores.

Kava should not be taken with alcohol or certain prescription drugs. Always talk to your doctor, herbalist or other health care professional if you are taking other herbs, or if you have liver problems. Never take kava when you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Kava should be seen as an all-natural substitute that is the equivalent of prescription drugs, without the harmful side effects.

Kava is a very powerful herb that has been used for centuries to treat anxiety, stress and nervousness. Kava is the best natural supplement for these types of disorders, but if you find that kava is not working for you, or is not working enough, never hesitate to talk to a doctor, herbalist or other health care professional to see if there may be a better drug or supplement for you.
