Poetry: Summer rain

by Benjamin Burgess

Created on: August 19, 2009

she leans forward once again, bowing to the sun
merciful rays of gold to thaw her
the long winter's retreat is forgiven,
a distant memory of spring's afterglow
her nights are short, her days are long,
a nod of her appreciation

birds sing their praises to the returning blooms
small mammals scurry and scatter
the herds' food source abundant
children cackle and chatter,
their parents light and soulful
life is back in full-swing

the sun's seemingly endless life,
as it gives and it gives, now full strength overhead
burns my skin and brings flush to my cheek
the relentless water that is vapor in air
suffocates and makes breath
much warmer to inhale

but mother nature awes, with her infinite wonder
her regulating mercy,
grows her clouds dark and rowdy
releasing water to cool her grounds
and balm the sultry surface that the sun has baked,
relieving and humbling her thankful population

and as I ride through the valley,
glancing at the sweating fields,
the storm has just passed, cooling my hot skin
the fresh air blows through my hair and hands
leaving me to wonder,
what else in the world could there be better?
