Why Valentine's Day is bittersweet

Valentines's Day, much like every other holiday, is exactly what you make it. With every holiday there are people that complain simply because it doesn't fit them. Christian holidays are critisized because not everyone believes in Christ, Columbus day because of the debate about his actions after discovering the new land, St. Paddy's day because not everyone is Irish.

The reason that Valentine's Day is bittersweet is the simple fact that the opinion of people will change from year to year. If you are in a relationship or there is even a thought of a relationship then chances are that you are excited about the upcoming holiday. If you are single and dwelling on it, then the opposite is more likely. This situation will change from year to year for individual people and that's what causes the heartache or anticipation. Also, the longer a relationship lasts, the less important Valentine's Day seems to be. If the relationship is a good one then it should carry the attitude that every day is Valentine's Day anyway.

To the people that are lucky enough to have a marraige, a relationship, or even a crush Valentine's day is a great day to spend time with the person you care for. For the single people that sit at home and cry because they are single on the day dedicated to lovers, remember that Ben and Jerry's makes everything better.
