DETOUR
Scene 1: A man TODD and woman JANICE are sitting at a table in a restaurant. They are upbeat and laughing, having a great time.
JANICE: (Laughing) Oh, that's so funny, Todd. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun. This was really nice.
TODD: Well, who says blind dates can't be great. I really had a good time, Janice.
JANICE: Oh, so did I. Thanks again for dinner.
TODD: Hey, listen, I've got two tickets for the big concert in the park on next Saturday. Why don't you come with me?
JANICE: The Rock Festival? Those tickets have been sold out for months.
TODD: Yeah, I know. I would love for you to go with me. The weather is supposed to be perfect. We'll pack a picnic lunch and make a whole day of it. How about it?
JANICE: Well, sure. I'd love to.
TODD: Okay. I'll pick you up at your place around nine on Saturday morning.
JANICE: Terrific. I'm really looking forward to it.
TODD: Well, lets get on out of here before I screw up the best first date I ever had.
JANICE: (Getting up) I bet the second date gets even better!
TODD: (Getting up) Thanks again. Get home safe and I'll see you bright and early on Saturday.
(Kisses her cheek)
JANICE: Bright and early! Good Night.
(JANICE exits the restaurant. Lights dim)
Scene 2 Saturday Morning at Janice's Apartment. She is wearing a short brightly colored summer dress, and fixing her hair. The doorbell rings.)
JANICE: Oh, Todd. Come in.
(TODD enters. He is wearing a black suit)
TODD: Hi. Sorry I'm a couple of minutes late.
JANICE: You're wearing a suit. I didn't think the concert in the park was formal. I can change.
TODD: No. UmWell, I guess I should have called you. You see my grandmother died during the week.
JANICE: Oh, Todd, I'm so sorry.
TODD: Well, really it's okay. She was sick for a while and we were expecting it. Anyway, the service and the burial are this morning.
JANICE Oh, I totally understand. We can get together some other time.
TODD: No no no we can still go to the concert. I just have to swing by the funeral parlor real quick and show my face.
JANICE: Show your face?
TODD: Yeah. I mean these tickets are a once in a lifetime thing. We don't have to miss the concert. In fact we should get going now.
JANICE: Well, aren't you going to the funeral first?
TODD: Yeah, we'll just swing by there. There's not enough time for me to drive back and get you, so come on along, and then
