On Sunday August 16, I attended a hardcore show entitled Bringing It Back, and it took place at a popular venue called Chain reaction. This venue is in Anaheim, California and it is a haven for music lovers of many different ages, but the average age range is probably about 14 to 17 years old. Tickets are a decent price ranging from about $5 to $20. This venue can appeal to people of all different musical tastes; playing everything from hardcore and punk to folk and indie, so there is definitely a show for you.
Enough about the venue, let's start talking about the show. The show was called Bringing It Back because the theme of the night was hardcore punk from the 80's and 90's. Three bands were set to play before the last and central performance. These bands were One Choice, Faith Snakes, and Mourningside, but the focal band of the night was a compilation of different musicians from bands such as Throw Down, 18 Visions, As Hope Dies, and Snake Eyes. The instrumental musicians stayed the same, but the lead singer changed every so often. Another important theme of the night was Straight Edge. For people who are not familiar with the terminology that is Straight Edge, let me enlighten you a bit. Straight Edge is followed by this symbol XXX, and no it has nothing to do with pornography, as a matter a fact, it stands for positive values. Each X stands for something significant; No alcohol, No tobacco, and No recreational drugs. This term was coined sometime in the 1980's by a band named Minor Threat in their song Straight Edge. It is a lifestyle that is led by many hardcore punks and that genre of music is exactly where it originated. As the symbol stands for good principles, it is a great influence on kids who are heavily involved in the hardcore scene, unfortunately, not too many people stick to these values, and eventually fall prey to the pressures of their friends and the media. Each of the bands made it an essential to mention the values of Straight Edge throughout the night.
Starting off the night was One choice. All I can say is that their performance was very average. Between songs, some of the musicians looked confused as to what to do next, so that was rather evident. Lead vocalist Vic Galindo's energy was up and down throughout the performance, and much of it failed to roar up the crowd. Something good that came out of this performance was the musicianship of the drummer, 15-year-old Adam Galindo and younger
