Essential mountain biking accessories

Mountain biking is a thrilling and ever growing sport and social pastime. Unfortunately it is just not as simple as buying a bike and hitting the track. The eager individual can be forgiven for wanting to get on the bike straight away, but there are several absolutely essential accessories (and some that are very nice to have) before they thrust themselves out of doors into the great outdoors of mounting biking.

Helmet

Wearing a helmet is an absolute must at all times. Accident and Emergency departments are awash with people who have head injuries from biking. The vast majority of these injuries could have been prevented, or vastly reduced, by the use of a helmet. Every biker will fall off their bike at some stage, this is guaranteed. However this won't always be a problem as long as a helmet is worn. Helmets can be picked up for cheap and are long lasting; there are no excuses for not wearing a helmet.

Lights

In most countries it is illegal not to have lights fitted on the bike, and it is law that new bikes come with both front and back lights fitted. However, this inevitably means that most lights which come as standard are of poor quality. They can be large, cumbersome and barely adequate for the task at hand. It is very likely therefore that a light upgrade will be of first priority.

Clothing

Like any outdoor activity the correct clothing should be used to ensure a person gets the most out of the activity. With mountain biking, shorts and lightweight but durable tops are the standard clothing for the sport. In case of rain some lightweight rain protection is usually a good idea to prevent suffering in the conditions too much. Gloves are also an essential purchase, not only for protect the hands from the weather, but also from the rubbing and the rigorous nature of the ride.

Backpack

It is often a very good idea to buy a small backpack, this is especially ideal for longer rides where a bite to eat is called for. A backpack is also essential to keep all the odd bits of pieces together, such as the puncture equipment, money, phone, keys and any other such items. There are specialist backpacks available which are smaller than the average size bag, to save on weight and convenience and some even come with bladder attachments, making it easier to drink from.

Bottle holder

For those not drinking via the bladder attachment, or even if they are, it is a very good idea to get a bottle holder fitted. They are very inexpensive to buy and convenient for keeping hydrated
