Poetry: Bullies

Bullies

He looked so sad when he got home
I asked him, You alright?
He slowly turned, and faced me,
I could see he'd had a fight.

Quietly he sat beside me
his hair so curly red,
looking up with that black eye
he turned and sadly said.

Tell me Pa, I got to know!
When you were small like me,
what you did and how if felt
when pushed by some bully?

Were you scared, did you cry?
Did you want to just back down?
Or did you look him in the face
and bravely stand your ground?

A lump mounted in my throat
everyone pays their dues
and many times, as a boy
I walked in those same shoes.

Perhaps today you lost that fight
they'll be others as you grow.
We all have things to learn in life
but one thing you must know.

I'm very proud of you son,
that eye's a badge of courage.
You bravely stood up for yourself
and don't you feel discouraged.

Bullies come and bullies go,
they're everywhere in life
and cause all kind of troubles
that lead to senseless strife.

So you will need some fancy moves
when reasoning with a schmuck.
I'll teach you what my Pa taught me
on the Art of How to Duck.
