When Eureka first came out three years ago, I was somewhat skeptical of the series. How could you integrate an absolutely normal law enforcement official, who wasn't looking for a job, into an uber-intelligent town owned by a corporation and controlled by the military? In retrospect, it was an absolutely brilliant concept. Eureka is one of the best series to be found on television today. Eureka completely revamps the idea of a comedy by basing it on the people being who they are, and being human, rather than the insulting comedy that currently reigns on TV. The characters and relationships within Eureka give depth and compassion to a town full of scientists that only want credit for the next big 'thing'.
Main character, Jack Carter, is the sheriff of Eureka. He is constantly on the go fighting the unusual fires that come with protecting a town that is using the most advanced scientific means to find the next great experiment. While Jack doesn't have the scientific background to completely understand some of the experiments that have gone awry, his down to earth, witty nature is a perfect compliment to all of the wackiness.
Deputy Jo Lupo had aspirations for the sheriff role until Jack came around. However, since she has been in Eureka longer than Jack she is able to give basic explanation for some of the more bizarre behavior patterns of the citizens of the town. Jo has an incredibly hard shell, but has somewhat softened when love interest Zane Donovan joined the cast. Together, you have a complete package of brains and brawn for combating some of the zanier misguided experiments happening at Global Dynamics (GD).
Sheriff Carter's daughter Zoe is a wonderfully comic character. She is part teen angst, part brilliant, part ditz, but an overall fun character to watch. Zoe has created messes for the Sheriff to clean up, as well as been part of the solution. Zoe's character was particularly well written because she offers the same style of level head of the Sheriff, while on occasion, trying to get as far away from him as possible.
Deep in the recessess of the GD, you can find Douglas Fargo, the geekiest of the geeky. While a brilliant scientist, he is able to jumble, fumble and inadvertantly create more messes than he know what to do with. Fargo has a soft spot for Jo, and wistfully watches from afar as Zane woos her away from him. Fargo is the foible to many of Jo's one liners and is generally exasperating to many in the town with his creative
