How to freeze homemade baby food

Making baby food at home is quick, economical and nutritious for your baby. The process is quick and easy, and if you were to do it every weekend, you would have quite a variety of frozen food cubes to feed your baby. Best of all, when you make baby's food, you know exactly what your baby is eating.

You will be able to easily make enough food to feed your baby for several weeks in less than a couple of hours using the following set of instructions. Or, you can choose to prepare a little bit of food at a time when you find a few spare minutes in your day (if you ever find those spare minutes!)

The supplies that you will need to make your own baby food include:

-a pot with a lid
-a vegetable steamer that fits inside the pot
-a potato masher (or food processor if you prefer)
-a freezer
-a few pounds of either a fruit or a vegetable such as apples, sweet potato, carrots

If you can, purchase food items that are on sale each week to maximize your savings. You may also choose to only make organic baby food; however, this will be a bit more expensive than using non-organic fruits and vegetables, as the sale prices on these items aren't usually as low as the regular fruits and vegetables that you will find in your market. If you are lucky and live in a warm climate, you could even grow your own fruits and vegetables year round to serve to your baby.

Below are the steps for making the baby food.

1) Place the steamer basket into the pot and add one cup of water to the pot.

2) Wash, peel and slice your or fruit or vegetable into small pieces and place these into the steamer basket.

3) Once you have added all of the fruit into the steamer basket, bring the pot to a rolling boil.

4) Once it has reached a boil, put the lid on the pot and reduce the heat to medium-low.

5) Simmer until the fruit or vegetable is soft.

6) Finally, mash the fruit or vegetable to your desired consistency with the potato masher and divide into ice cube trays.

7) Freeze the ice cube trays and once frozen, transfer the cubes into freezer proof plastic storage bags (be sure to mark with the date).

You can then remove as many cubes as you like at a time to defrost for your baby's meal. You may want to mix and match cubes (e.g., a peach cube and an apple cube). Another option is to add defrosted fruit cubes to baby rice cereal or baby oatmeal. Your baby will love the unique flavor combinations.
