The selection of elective courses can seem like an overwhelming process. Some of those class titles on the roster seem almost laughable! With everything out there from sword fighting and fantasy novel analysis to photography and ping-pong, which electives will serve you best as a college student? If you are having trouble narrowing down those electives, here are a few tips to get you started.
Stay Active
One of the biggest problems that college students face is the harsh reality of lifestyle change. It sounds like an easy adjustment, but adjusting to life as a college student involves so much more than learning how to cram all that information for the next exam. Many college students place so much emphasis on academics that their physical and emotional well-being gets severely neglected. You've heard of the Freshman Fifteen, maybe it happened to you, or maybe you gained more than your fair share of weight. Concern for diet and exercise often takes low priority on the totem pole for many busy college students. But what better way to incorporate physical activity and exercise into your routine than to actually take a physical education class? You need exercise, so why not get credit for it? Sign up for the next swimming class, or register for that sport you always wanted to learn, like racquetball or tennis. Not only will you stay fit and get energized for the rest of your day, but these classes also don't involve much, if any homework. Therefore you get to enjoy a good workout, and also get college credits for little effort. Well, it will require physical effort for sure, but it will be fun!
Find A Hobby
A very successful wedding photographer/photo journalist did not always know that he wanted to be a photographer. He just casually signed up for his college's photography class, thinking it would be a fun hobby to learn. Little did he know that he would build a very successful career around the skills that he began developing in that single class, and now he is an internationally recognized photographer. You may be thinking that your elective classes are there just to fill a void, but if you give them a chance, they might turn into career opportunities. Combine your hobby interests with a major in Business and you might be the next successful business owner. No college class is ever a waste of time if you make the most of it. So take that sewing class or that carpentry class! You never know which skills you might formulate into your lifelong career!
Undecided No More
Are you one of those students who is tired of having the word "undecided" on his major declaration form? Wouldn't you like to finally decide on the right major for you? Then use your electives to help you define your path! Many course studies offer basic elective courses, such as entry level Spanish or Astronomy or Biology. If you even have an inkling of an interest in any of these fields, try taking an elective course to get your feet wet. You just might discover your passion and discover which major declaration is right for you. Even if you find out that the class isn't your cup of tea, you'll still fulfill an elective requirement, and you'll be one step closer to narrowing down your decision on which major to declare.
While elective courses might just seem like a bunch of fluff, they are anything but that! Electives are a great way to discover your interests, and develop future career skills. They are the perfect complement to every college student's education!
