Our wedding, all the planning the hard work pouring over guest lists, deciding menus, picking the hall, and so many other things my wife would not let me do. I was however charged with the task of finding and arranging for our honeymoon.
So there I was amid a looming tower of pamphlets and travel guides all offering the perfect romantic setting. The problem was most of the Caribbean hot spots are just that. They are over run with tourists, partyers, families. Not exactly what I wanted. It was then that a friend of mine who is a travel agent told me about St. Lucia. This former British colony proved to be everything I had been looking for.
We arrived at the end of October, the beginning of the rainy season. The weather was beautiful. It did rain everyday twice for five minutes each time. Just before lunch and again before dinner. This proved to be a nice refreshing way to cool down after a long morning baking in the sun. The sky would return to a clear blue and the stars stayed out all night.
We stayed at the Windham Morgan Bay Resort just outside the capital city of Castries. This establishment was lovely. Located right on the water on the Caribbean side of the Island, the view behind us was of rain forest covered mountains. The food was excellent and the service second to none.
This is a small Island not known to be a party Island. It has jungles, mountains, a volcano which is still active, albeit not very. The botanical gardens are wonderful with the chance to soak in the mineral hot springs. You can also climb the Pitons. A pair of mountains which are cone shaped rather narrow but tall.
We took a tour, by Jeep, of the rain forest. We saw snakes, lizards, and incredible birds. On this tour we walked for about an hour along a stream bed until we reached a water fall where they had set up a small hut were you could try a variety of local fruit and enjoy a dip in the clear pool at the base of the water fall. The back along the stream was breathtaking all kinds of vibrant wild flowers as far as we could see.
We also toured some of the smaller villages and found the locals to be very warm and hospitable.
St. Lucia is not the cheapest destination, but it offers a truly relaxing, romantic get away for two.
