Water type pokemon, there's an abundance is there not? To name a few; Squirtle, Poliwag, Shellder, Goldeen, Staryu, Vaporeon and Marile. But which ones are good you ask? Firstly this article will not tell you what the best type of water pokemon is it will rather advise on how best to decide on a water pokemon. Well honestly they are all good in the right situation, with the right moves and with a good trainer. However you should choose based on a number of factors. These factors include;
What moves do you want to end up with? There is an abundance of moves available for water type pokemon not all necessarily water based, however it would be rather silly to use a water based pokemon that had no water type moves. Of course diversity in move lists is recommended in order to allow the pokemon to battle well against multiple types of enemies.
What other pokemon you have in your party? The other five choices for pokemon in your party will obviously have some weaknesses which you can hope to fill with your water type pokemon who can learn moves such as Surf to compensate for weak water moves and allow water travel.
How experienced you are as a player? Depending on your skill level it may be best that you choose simple water pokemon that are easy to develop in order to fully benefit from the use of a water type pokemon however if you are an experienced player a challenge may be far more enjoyable.
The way you are going to develop the pokemon? Whether you are going to use the daycare centre, train the pokemon from a low level, prevent evolution until a higher level or use rare candy will all determine how good your water type pokemon is, obviously the more natural and caring your development process is the better the pokemon will result.
What pokemon you like best? A very important factor is how much you like a particular kind of water type pokemon; as in if you think Starmie is the coolest pokemon on the face of the world, then go for it because its how you use the pokemon that is most important.
What stats each pokemon has? Choosing a water type pokemon will rely upon whether you want a strong or fast pokemon and stats will determine this; so a bit of research into the stats of each type of pokemon you are considering will aid you in your decision.
These factors though they may seem simple can determine the difference between a good water type pokemon and a terrible water type pokemon. This can obviously be applied to all types of pokemon not just water type. By personal preference my favourite water pokemon is Gyrados simply because hes so bad-ass and developing him is a challenge because you must level him up from a weak and useless Magicarp and he only begins to learn decent moves at higher levels and with the aid of TM's and/or HM's. Not all players like a challenge and in this case some of the easier developing pokemon such as Squirtle as a starter or Lapras a little later in the game.
