A SILENT WORLD
What would the world be without sound?
Could you find contentment in silence?
Would you miss the voice of the land?
Would you survive with no conversation?
The sound of the wind shuffling the leaves.
The background song of a rushing river.
The warble of a magpie greeting a new day.
The bleating of a lamb, the lowing of a cow.
The sounds of sweet music to soothe your soul.
The bark of a dog, the purr of a cat.
A slamming door, a car horn.
The ring of a telephone, the call of wild geese.
The calming crackle of a fire in the hearth.
Did you hear your babies first cry when forced from the womb?
Could you live without the laughter of your children,
Or their urgent cry when something goes awry?
The tenderness in your partner's voice.
Welcome to the deaf persons world.

Poetry: Deafness
How loud is silence
Quick moving hands,
sign excitement.
Mouths moving
with quiet sentences,
flow to my ears.
Faces weighted

A SILENT WORLD
What would the world be without sound?
Could you find contentment in silence?
Would you miss the voice
by Lisa Kates
Alone in crowded rooms
As
Mouths move
Silent as falling snow.
Sitting in a corner
Watching gestures speak
Living in dreams

Bespeak me, brother
I cannot hear:
Your entreaties fall
On deaf ears.
I cry out for
Your voice
Your touch
Lost
In the voice
Of my
Hollow ears
Unable to hear
Blocked from anger
Saved from fear
I loved you then
I love you now
People wonder why
Ask me how
