The best baseball movies of all time, now that is a tough question. There have been several baseball movies that can qualify for the title. "The Natural", "Field of Dreams" and even "Rookie of the Year. But there are a few others that also qualify to be amongst the discussion when it comes to best baseball movies of all time.
The first movie to discuss is "Major League". This movie ranks among the greatest baseball movies because it was really a comedy type film but it managed to keep the realism of baseball through the comedy. The tryouts, the training camps, the long road trips and the divisional rivals all managed to be a part of this movie. And let's not forget about one of the best aspects of the movie, the characters. The characters in this movie were great. Jake, the journeyman catcher who was the glue that kept the team together. Roger Dorn, the pretty boy shortstop who cared more about his financial portfolio that his fielding skills. Vaughn, the "Wild Thing", power throwing pitcher who has a little bit of a control problem due to the fact that he needs glasses. Sorano, the power hitting slugger who could hit the ball a ton,but had a little bit of trouble with the off speed pitches. And finally, who could forget Willie Mays Haze. The ground ball hitting speedster who was the best base runner in the league. The precision comedy and the cast of characters, made this movie one of the best baseball movies of all time.
The next movie is CLEARLY one of the best baseball movies of all time, and that movie is "The Bad News Bears". This was a movie that everyone could relate to for the simple fact that everyone either, played on or knew of a team, that stunk up the baseball cub league. In this movie, the Bears were definitely that team. Along with the fact that the movie was relateable to the audience was the idea of a team of misfits coming together, with the help of its rag tag coach, to not only make it to the championship but to win it all. Everyone loves the underdog, and the Bears gave the viewer a reason to root for the underdog again.
The final movie that ranks among the best baseball movies of all time is "The Sandlot" This is a nice wholesome movie that reminds the viewer of a more innocent time in baseball. The time when kids would go to an old park, grass area or a local baseball diamond and just have fun playing the game. Every kid in this movie really had fun playing the game of baseball, and that is what it is really all about. They were all just kids who played the game for fun and not for fame. Although there was one player that they all knew was destined for greatness......Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez. Benny was that special player out of the group, that everyone can relate to, who was clearly better than everyone else but he was still such a likable guy. Not only was he the best player but he took the time to help out a little player named, Smalls, and made him a pretty descent player. Well, at least he made a descent ninth player for there team!
The main thing that all of these movies have in common is the ability to relate to the viewer. Whether it is through the characters, the nostalgia or the reminder of childhoods past, these movies really get the job done. This is what they deserve to be considered some of the best baseball movies of all time.
