Novel excerpts: Magical fantasy

Melstone wondered the forest filled ruins of an age old fort that once held gaze over the valley and farm where his family settled before he was born. Since age seven he ran about these old stone walls and mounds of dirt pretending to be fighting grand battles and skirmishes. With two sticks tied together with a thin piece of cloth to form a hilt of a blade.

His brother was eight years the older and could never venture any further then the wire fence at the north end of the farm. Being the older and the stronger father made him word the ox and plant most of the farms fields. Melstone never knew the mother that birthed him, for she past to the underworld giving him life. Their father slowly waned in health to an illness that has plagued the farm lands for years now. Only affecting the not so well nurtured folks of the land.

Once a year the three of them make a trip to the make their way across the fields to a family plot near the main road heading to the capitol. There with a beautiful head stone carved to the likeness of the one that brought such joy to the family before the plague took her. In silence the three of them and their two dogs walked to the plot, to lay the traditional plate of food at the headstone. Next to the stone was three other headstones. Two were carved of the grandparents, the ones who fought to keep the land. The third was of a soldier, a bust of his likeness carved into a marble box. The oldest brother, for many years the father spoke of his valor and bravery. Saving many people from certain death that would have befallen them if the enemy. Even though the grave was empty and only his sword and shield had been buried there.

Melstone never really believed his brother to be dead because of his father's constant hunting tales he would tell on the day of his remembrance. But in Melstone's heart as the years past the feeling of his brother being still alive grew. It was the end of the winter and the spring would now bring forth its plenty at the farm. But this time it would be him tending to the fields and helping the hired hands. For his older brother, Fendree will attend the Republics Academy. Their great grandfather served and their father gave eight years in the border guard.

Since the civil war started the Republic has called for troops in all counties loyal to the Noble's family. During the firsts six years of the war called their older brother who never came back. Now Fendreethe older brother of 25 has decided to go join the Academy.
