A surprising number and variety of foods in existence today can help to promote human longevity. These so-called "super foods" are typically low in or entirely devoid of cholesterol, saturated fat, trans fats and other undesirable molecules, while being highly nutrient-dense. Additionally, they often contain high levels of antioxidants, which are molecules that help prevent the formation of harmful free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals can lead to significant cell damage and ultimately disease.
Super foods come in many forms, some of which you may have never tried. Still others you will have enjoyed throughout your lifetime. Super foods can be found in all six major food groups from the U.S. Food Pyramid, including grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, milk, and meat and beans.

Barley, bulgar, whole wheat and wild or brown rice are also hearth healthy, and the insoluble fiber in grains helps fight many types of cancer, including that of the colon.
Although technically a seed instead of a grain as it is usually referred, quinoa never-the-less is exceptionally powerful, even amongst super foods. Not only is it nutrient-rich with generous amounts of dietary fiber, but it uniquely provides all of the essential amino acids that we typically can only derive from meat. It is a complete protein source without any saturated fat or cholesterol whatsoever.
2. Vegetables - Nearly all members of this food group provide the human body with valuable nutrition for a bargain in terms of calories and fat. However, some vegetables rise up in their own ranks as foods that serve to robustly promote longevity. Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower are especially powerful agents in the fight against cardiovascular disease and cancer. Spinach, carrots, Allium vegetables (onions, leeks and garlic), walnuts, almonds, and pumpkin are other notable super foods. Spices such as ground cinnamon and turmeric are very beneficial, and green tea should be consumed on a daily basis (up to 4 cups per day) as a potent cancer fighter.
3. Fruits - Although most fruits are naturally higher in sugar than vegetables, this disadvantage is minor and far outweighed by their strengths. Fruits are teeming
