I find it very difficult taking a stand on this issue. And so, do please pardon my wavy presentation. But trust me, I will be very factual and informative.
Come to think of it, does it really matter who marries or unites with who? When, where and perhaps how they say I do? Who officiates or who attends the event? One thing we all look forward to in any kind of tie we embark on is happiness, without which the aim of that bond is flawed.
God in His infinite wisdom predestined man as pregnant with ideas and struggles. This ideas make us, influencing our every being to think and act differently, feelings being paramount. And thus, the power of choice, preference, and priority cannot be over ridden.
According to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) of the Unites States, signed in by President Bill Clinton in 1996, it is clearly stated that the federal government recognises marriage as a 'legal union of one man and one woman as husband and wife, and as such, the disparity between civil union and marriage reflect in their legal benefits, as there are no less than 25 legal benefits that are accrued to marriage and not civil union.
It is true that no human being except God, can create another living being. And for this, no one, for any reason, has the right whatsoever, to deny a fellow man of his rightful place and benefits in the society on the basis of personal choice and ideas.
I really don't care about the terms: civil union, marriage, or any other manipulated English convention for that matter, as a yard stick to modifying and creating unnecessary conditions as to affect people's decision and well being. This is tantamount to prejudice!
How about persons for reasons best known to them, consider pets for life partners? What word does English owe to that?
On the other hand, I'm yet to reconcile the concept of persons of same sex, deciding to take each other as man and wife. Even science and technology has not cleared my curiosity to this effect.
Marriage in every true sense was instituted by God! And if history and trend is anything to go by, then we are justified to owe the bond to persons of opposite sex.
As with marriage, man or husband refers to the male gender, while woman or wife refers to the female gender, I wonder what the world would be like, when a fellow man like myself, would be referred to as a wife.
But no problem though, because things change. I guess the due only lies on research to generate words to match meanings as it has always done to suite herself in many other life's challenges.
As earlier stated, happiness is the primary aim to any type of bond or union. How many marriages, despite all its accrued legal benefits are, and perhaps end up in happiness. In fact, the word divorce goes neck to neck with marriage.
Nonetheless, I suggest the prevailing condition for any kind of bond whatsoever, should be based upon couples' choice and not sex disparity.
