The problem with health care regardless of who is paying for it is that sadly it focuses on people being unwell. Where ever you choose to get examples from you will see ever increasing hospital waiting lists and spiralling costs. People are living longer and requiring more procedures and we are the most unhealthy generation in a long time. If we take a wee peek at the statistics for diabetes we would find a dollar value for treatment which will soon be able to feed the third world.
The major problem is when you put any essential service in the private sector there corporate greed has no conscience. What has happened is that corporate America has been given a licence to print money and play God with the lives of many citizens. Everybody deserves a fair deal but the way the value of the fair deal is structured even a visit to a Doctor is difficult for many. The medications for a sick child can bankrupt families. Some argue health care should only be offered to those who have contributed, never forget, there for the grace of God go I. Many people contribute in many different ways.
So where is the incentive for those who take an interest in good nutrition? Where are the incentives for those who exercise? The health budget is rising nearly as fast as the sea levels so that insurance premiums are crippling many people from different income streams. Trying to put a cap on health costs has failed in every western nation. It might now be time for an approach that at first might sound a bit outrageous but will jell with time and consideration.
Put a cap on the health budget now. The government will come up with a plan worth writing home about, which will begin to generate a better deal for all. Then a huge investment in the education around wellness. Start in the schools and work into the wider communities. Telling people is not always enough, showing them will however cut the mustard. With something like diabetes you could put people in a health camp, show them how to cook mint-deluxe food, generate a good exercise program. In essence support people to be well with education and example.
This may sound a little left field but look at the improvement to quality of life. Education was given to Americans by the mighty trio as a right in a new free land and it has helped to shape a very special nation. Knowledge is capital, capital that sets us apart as achievers.
