The pros and cons of country and city living: Which is better to live in?

Many people argue about which is the better choice, living in the city or living in the country. Those who enjoy living in the city will ridicule those who enjoy the rural lifestyle, and vice versa. Having lived in both, major cities and very rural areas all across the United States, I must say I personally prefer the country to the city living. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to both styles of living.

I realize that country living in not everyone's cup of tea. The pros for living in the city, as some will claim, are that there are more conveniences and everything you could possibly want is more easily attainable. There are more jobs, stores, and schools. There are more forms and places of entertainment, hospitals and other health facilities. Overall, just simply more of everything.

Meanwhile, the cons to metropolitan living are the traffic congestion, the lack of housing, the noise, and air pollution. Other cons are the excessive exposure to people with contagious diseases, higher crime rates, and higher costs of living. Additionally, there is the lack of availability for certain levels of education (i.e., pre-K and Head-start programs). Not to mention the lack of funding for extra-curricular events due to having too many students to provide services for in the inner city slum areas. Overall, it simply comes down to having too many people living in crowded conditions.

The average person living in the country would tell you that the pros to living a rural life are just as many as those to city living. He or she would mention the cleaner air, the slower pace of life, and the friendliness of the community. He or she would point out the lack of noise, the lack of traffic congestion, and how you can grow your own food so you know where it is coming from. That person would also say there's plenty of entertainment. There's fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, swimming, and cycling. In addition, there is horseback riding, rodeos, auctions, and gardening. If you prefer more social events, then attend all the school functions, church functions, fund raisers, and county fairs that are constantly occurring.

If pressed hard, that same average country person might admit there are a few cons to living in a rural area. He or she might agree that it would occasionally be nice to have fast food places or a movie theater close by. Or to have better hospital care available, and that it would
