The characters of Spongebob

by Wendy Morgan

Looking beyond the funny story lines, memorable music, wacky antics and general life lessons, the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants has fantastic characters.

The title character, Spongebob Squarepants is a well meaning, happy go lucky sea sponge looking for the best in life. One of Spongebob's earliest dreams was to be a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Once he accomplished his career goal, he put his entire heart and soul into it, striving every day to do a good job and put love into all he made. Spongebob also loves to go 'catch and release' jellyfishing with Patrick. When not at work or in Jellyfish fields, you can find Spongebob practicing karate with Sandy, trying to convince Squidward to play, or making his way around Bikini Bottom telling everyone hello. While in the middle of his frolicking, Spongebob continues his pursuit of education in boating school

Spongebob's best friend is Patrick Star. While an completely lovable guy, Patrick isn't the smartest guy. Patricks main focus is to get up in the morning and hang out in his rock. Patrick is an unfailing friend to Spongebob, there for every adventure and accident, ready to be the punchline of every joke. Patrick offers great one liners and an occasional deep insight to a situation.

Spongebob's next door neighbor and co-worker is Squidward Tentacles. While spending each day as a lowly cashier, he aspires to greatness. Squidward tries to spend as much time as possible avoiding Spongebob, especially since he has to work with him. Squidward likes to play his clarinet and imagine that he is the most well-loved, richest, most popular guy in Bikini Bottom. Every once in a while, Squidward has to face his nemesis Squilliam Fancypants who is everything that he is not.

Sandy Squirrel is a scientific wonder from land, who lives in Bikini Bottom to prove that 'land critters' can do anything 'undersea critters' can. She lives in a wonderful tree dome, experimenting and building wonderful contraptions. In her spare time, Sandy loves to practice karate with Spongebob and foil his insane plots.

Mr. Krabs is the greedy owner of the Krusty Krab. He holds the secret formula to the Krabby Patty close to his heart and protects it with all of his might from the evil Plankton. Mr. Krabs spends each day focused on his love of money, trying to figure out how to get Spongebob and Squidward to either work for free or pay him for the joy of coming to the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs also has to balance his love of money with his love of his daughter (a whale), Pearl.

Plankton is the ultimate foe of Bikini Bottom. While small in stature, Plankton is large in rage and vengeance. Plankton just wants to have a successful restaurant like Mr. Krabs, but the only way for that to happen is to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Plankton is always concocting crazy schemes to sneak in and steal the formula from right underneath Mr. Krabs formula, but rarely finds the prize. When he does find the formula, it is ripped right out of his tiny limbs.

Mrs. Puff is the boating (driving) instructor in Bikini Bottom. Obviously a good teacher, Mrs. Puff has but one flaw, Spongebob. Try as he might, Spongebob cannot pass his boating test, thereby showing up in Mrs. Puff's class time and time again. While not a main character, Mrs. Puff interacts on a regular basis and is entertaining with her love of teaching driving skills to her students.

There are lots of fun characters that come in and out of Spongebob episodes that keep things entertaining. The main characters just keep you coming back.
