Plus-sized women face special challenges when looking for clothes. Sometimes, it might seem like all the good clothes are made for thin girls. However, if you know where to look (at plus-sized stores and online fashion spots for plus-size apparel) you can find a great collection of clothes for the plus-sized woman.
First and foremost, always choose clothes not just based on how they look, but how they feel. Always wear your size. Don't try to squeeze into a smaller size because it will be unflattering. And don't wear super baggy clothes either, because you're selling yourself short. Wear something that you feel good about wearing and half the battle's won. Wear clothes that accentuate your good points; don't hide your body.
The most important thing to remember about choosing the right colors for your clothes is to go for solid colors, or clothes that have tiny patterns. Big patterns (like huge flowers) are not slimming. Small patterns (tiny flowers) are much more flattering.
It's unfortunately true that white and pastels add on the pounds. So go for darker colors like black or dark red. Bright blues, purples and dark pinks also work well.
Pants are a big problem for big girls. The best pants are jeans that taper at the knee and widen out after the calves. Boot cut jeans are best. The great thing about boot-cut jeans is that they go with almost anything, and can be worn with sandals, boots or high heels to dress them up.
Long sleeve dresses, or dresses that have quarter-length sleeves are best for the curvy girl. Dresses that have narrow waists and full skirts are very flattering to the full-figured woman. Scoop-necks or plunging necklines also work well. The best dress lengths are between a few inches above the knee, to ankle-length. For the basic date dress, go for one that ends just below the knee.
Peasant blouses are super cute, especially because they are often longer blouses that hide tummy bulge. Also think about getting the scoop neck for your blouses. Again, like dresses, long-sleeve and quarter-length sleeves (these end just after the elbow) are best.
Don't forget to wear something that makes you feel good. If the mirror shows it looks good, but it's scratchy or just plain uncomfortable, don't buy it. It's always better to dress for comfort. Your comfort level will always make you look better no matter what your dress size is.
