A touchscreen. Typing with the tap of your fingers. Applications galore. Sleek and sophisticated. The Apple iPhone was one of the most long-awaited smartphones of the 21st century. Not only did it revolutionize the way people use their cell phones, but the original iPhone and iPhone 3G helped pave the way for smartphones.

The iPhone 3G, however, has had its share of criticism. Though the phone itself is well-made, some kinks and issues have cropped up since its introduction to the market. For one, many people at first complained about software issues. The complaints were mostly about how the software were barely tested, and once used in actual users' iPhones, the software would make the phone go haywire, or at least make the phone not work.

The most recent problem with the software for iPhone 3G was earlier in 2009, when thousands of people began going to Apple stores saying that they couldn't make a call with their iPhone. This would make users of other smartphones raise an eyebrow. What good is a phone if you can't make phone calls? The solution came in the form of iPhone exchanges. Consumers were taught that iPhones in "white" boxes were the solution to the software problem. Personal experience taught me that the software itself wasn't fixable. Instead, there seemed to a glitch, in which the only answer was to change the phone itself.

However, the iPhone 3G has made people obsessed with their cell phones, even more than ever. The vast number of applications available for download or for purchase is incredible, and you can find virtually any application for anything that you want to do. Want city guides? There's a guide for that. Need to update your iPhone's camera features? There are applications for that. Need to record notes? You can find applications for that. And, the best news is that some really good applications are free.

The updates for iPhone are also free. If you have an iPod Touch, you know that in order to get the updates you have to pay a price. For iPhone users, the updates are available at no cost. Even the new 3.0 software the includes features like cut and paste was free. This means that even if Apple comes out with a new iPhone every one or two years, your older iPhone 3G will still enjoy most of the features available in the new iPhones (Apple calls this "generations").

So, if you want a phone that's smart enough to do practically anything except for walking, you may want to give the iPhone 3G a try.
