The most common things students forget to pack for college

Packing for college is more challenging than pulling together everything you need for a vacation. You probably won't be living in Siberia, and stores will be nearby, but just because you have access doesn't mean you want to run there right off the bat to stock up on living essentials. You're on your own, possibly for the first time. This is Step One in life.

Those facts add up to time to organize. The first step in packing up to head off to college is creating a table, broken into categories shown below. List all items you need, which will save brain work because all you have to do is check off things as you set them aside for college - much easier than remembering, "Did I remember to pack X?"

ORGANIZATION

Before you leave home, make a table broken down into:

* personal care items

* school supplies

* clothing and shoes

* general

Include columns for Item, Purchased, Packed, Miscellaneous comments. List even the obvious: otherwise you could arrive at college without your essentials, such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hair dryer and other personal care items. Survey your bathroom at home, and list each item you want to take. Survey your bedroom and do the same. Scout around the kitchen.

PERSONAL CARE ITEMS

Under personal care, break out every item you typically will use, such as shampoo and conditioner; nail supplies, including clippers, files, polish and remover; toilet paper if you're moving into an apartment; wash cloths, towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash; facial care items and over-the-counter medications, vitamins and prescriptions. Add an ample supply of tissues so you can hand a few to mom when she sheds tears of joy, and for your dad while he thinks about what this venture will cost.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

The last thing you want to do is hit campus and have to purchase supplies at the campus bookstore, where high prices and slim selections are notorious. Save your money for books and a meal out with friends. Basics to take with you include tape, backpack, pencils, erasers, pens, scissors, paper, notebooks, planner/wall calendar, ruler, and highlighters.

You'll want to have time to investigate your new community and meet new friends instead of doing without or dashing out to pick up more necessities and a luxury or two.

CLOTHING AND SHOES

Like mom always suggested, make sure you have a jacket that is heavy and light weight because you never know when the weather will change. Umbrella. Gloves if you're in a cold climate. Casual shoe(s) and some
