Poetry: The art of deception

by Rachel Carter

Created on: August 15, 2009

there is something about my foolishness,
that draws them in.
unwilling for either, then wrapped in each other.
there is something about my blatant words,
that makes them believe that
I am worthy of love.

there is something about my subtle brokenness,
that makes me them want to fix me;
repair my mistakes, and my future.
there is something about the bluffs they call,
that makes me them think -

that maybe she is not a worn doll,
that maybe she is worth more than the castaway child.
that maybe she will make something of herself.

they are wrong.

she is hated for deceit,
deceit that she did not realize existed under her skin,
deceit that she does not even attempt.
deceit that she is not even aware of.
