Packing a diaper bag for an extended excursion can be frustrating? What should I pack? Do I need more wipes? How many outfits do I need? The rules for packing a diaper bag for a long trip are different than for a much shorter outing. Here are some great ideas for packing a diaper bag for a long day trip. 1. DIAPERS AND WIPES - Typically, you should pack enough diapers that your child would use in one day, including about 5 extras. Also, it helps to bring a household-sized box of wipes. Wipes are not only great for changing baby, but for those little messes that you may encounter during the day's activities. Scented diaper trashbags such as, Diaper Duck Travel Buddy from Munchkin is an adorable way to keep those stinky diapers at bay during your trip. It is not always possible to dispose of dirty diapers immediately, so this is a great alternative to stashing them in the diaper bag or a regular grocery bag.

2. CHANGE OF CLOTHES - Be sure to include at least two full outfits in case of an accident and/or a sudden change in the weather. A lightweight jacket or sweater may be needed, even if the weather is warm during the day. The evening can be chilly and your baby is more sensitive to the change in temperature than you are.
Storing these clothes in a reclosable storage bag will help protect them from spills inside the diaper bag.
3. BLANKETS - Receiving blankets are very versatile and including one or two can come in handy. They can be used as a changing pad (if you didn't pack one already), to clean up messes, a nursing cover, or for their original purpose, to keep your baby warm.

4. TOYS - Including a couple age appropriate toys will help entertain your child while riding in the car. Long car trips can be troublesome for little ones and they will need some form of entertainment. Bringing a few of his favorite toys will help calm your baby and keep him in a good mood. If you have a DVD player installed in your vehicle, packing a DVD or two may help keep him entertained or help him drift off for a much needed nap.

5. FOOD - If you use formula, be sure to pack bottles and plenty of formula. It is better to overestimate the amount that your child will consume than underestimate it. Premixed formula is quick and easy, but if you use powdered formula, a formula mixer can make things a bit easier. If your child is older, be sure to pack juice, water, and snacks for in between meals.

6. THE LITTLE EXTRAS - Sunscreen, first aid supplies, antibacterial wipes, and a few bags for used wipes and other trash that your baby may accumulate on your trip, are all non-essential but great things to have on hand.

Packing a diaper bag for a long trip may require more advance preparation than you are used to. Making a list of the things that you will need on your journey will help you from forgetting not only the extras, but the basics. You don't want to spend four hours driving to your destination only to realize that you've run out of diapers.
