About same-sex marriage.
I have been thinking about this for awhile and have been debating with many people on online forums and talking about it with my friends for a long time. It really should not be a huge concern for us, as our country and state have the economic downturn to deal with, but it means a lot to many people and concerns and affects them greatly.
The first thing is that marriage is a word. It's literal meaning from Merriam-Webster:
marriage
Pronunciation:
\mer-ij, ma-rij\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English mariage, from Anglo-French, from marier to marry
Date:
14th century
1 a (1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2): the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage> b: the mutual relation of married persons : wedlock c: the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage2: an act of marrying or the rite by which the married status is effected ; especially : the wedding ceremony and attendant festivities or formalities3: an intimate or close union <the marriage of painting and poetry J. T. Shawcross>
Words, in my opinion, do not BELONG to anyone, unless they happen to be originally coined and/or trademarked. Marriage is not a trademarked word. No one can say who first used the word marriage, or whence from first it came. The religion of Christianity would like people to believe that the god they worship created the word marriage and first established it's meaning. I beg to differ as marriage has been in documents older than the Bible, and at around the same time in different cultures and religions as the Bible. Also, the Bible was written by humans, who "claimed" to be writing the word of god. To me, it's just a story with some well-known people in it. I know that certain religions find it hard to believe that some people DO NOT believe in their god(s). That is where this whole thing goes wrong.
Here in Maine, the bill for same-sex couples passed and would make it legal for those of the homosexual persuasion to marry, later this year. As soon as this came about, the Catholic Diocese, the Maine Marriage Alliance, and the Maine Family Policy Council (formerly the Christian Civic League of Maine) voiced their opposition and the forming of petitions to collect signatures to eradicate this as law.
The most upsetting thing about all of these is that they
