Should our politicians be held to a higher moral standard?

Title endorsed in part by:

Our politicians should be held to the highest possible moral standard given the trust and responsibilities they hold in their control. In a representative style of government like the United States has the people themselves have very little say in how the government is run. Citizens elect representatives whose sole purpose is to represent the interests of their constituents. This representation is manifested in many ways and many decisions, all of which have a dramatic impact to the average citizen. Entrusting an individual with such responsibility should not be done lightly.

An elected representative should reflect the concerns and moral standards of the people who elected him. At the very least she should adhere to the same standards as the rest of the population. For politicians more so than average Americans it's vitally important to go out of your way to avoid violating the public trust. Not only have you been elected to represent the people but being on the government payroll you are also drawing on taxpayer money for your services. Anyone paid by the tax payers should immediately be held to a higher standard than the average citizen.

With a toxic mix of corruption and politics it is not surprising that large corporations have taken advantage of what amounts to an ideal situation for themselves to profit. With such a target rich environment of politicians to bribe, cajole and influence big businesses are really the entities that are running the country. This is an unfortunate fact that is not exclusive to the United States. Political posturing of large industries is rampant throughout the world. Our more open press and generally stronger economy seem to make the corruption a little more transparent than in other parts of the
