Testimonies: I hate Valentine's Day

Hate is a very strong word, and I'm not sure it describes how I feel about Valentine's day. I like the idea of going out for dinner a few times during the year, and February 14th seems like as good a day as any.

What I don't like, though, is the idea that I, personally, should be expected to fill the coffers of Hallmark, Godiva, FTD and their ilk, every year, like clockwork. In my opinion, the Beatles had it right when they sang, "Can't buy me love." I've had my share of dates over the years, and my share of relationships, and I've yet to see any pattern of correlation between buying things for a person and loving - or being loved by - them.

I'd much rather just be a loving person 365 days a year, instead of buying expensive tokens now and then. It's who I really am, and those guys will still get some money from me - just a little less predictably.
