What is reverse vasectomy?

Reverse vasectomy is a surgery that reverses the male sterilization procedure that involve vasectomy. It is something like a U-turn in a decision made. To fully understand reverse vasectomy, we should understand the procedure of vasectomy first.

1. Vasectomy to avoid pregnancy to partner.

A vasectomy is a relatively simple, surgical sterilization procedure for men done to make sure his spouse does not getting pregnant. During this procedure, a small segment of the vas, that is a long tube that transports the sperm from testicles will be cut and removed while the open ends of the vas are then shut either with stitches, cautery or metal clips. This process will block normal flow of sperm and after that men can have normal sex without making his partner getting pregnant.

Reverse vasectomy however, is possible due to the fact that men produce sperm continuously from the time of puberty and continue to do so even after vasectomy is done. In general cases, the vasectomy operation usually does not interfere with the function of the testes and sexual desire in men.

2. Reverse vasectomy

After a successful vasectomy for many years after that, some men do change their minds for variety of reasons but they basically involves divorce, changes of priority or simply a regretful awakening. This is where reverse vasectomy done. Reverse vasectomy is simply the reversal of that sterilization done via vasectomy procedure. Reverse vasectomy involves an operation that reconnects the reproductive tract that has been cut via vasectomy. Reverse vasectomy is basically performed to restore back the fertility in men.

Reverse vasectomy by its nature is more challenging surgery where the ends of the vas are micro-surgically reattached and reconnected in multiple layers under a high powered surgery microscope. The successful operation shall allow sperm to flow again through the vas.

Reverse vasectomy may be just an outpatient procedure that only took around three to four hour of surgery and does not even require hospitalization but it is one of the most challenging surgeries in all of medicine.

3. Risk factors

The shorter the time between vasectomy reversal procedure, the greater the percentage of success rate will be due to the minimized risk of epidemiology damage and other secondary obstruction. By the nature of its delicate procedure, reverse vasectomy should be done by a really expert and experienced micro surgeon.

Reverse vasectomy is a possible measure done to become a father again but you must consider all the difficulties, pain and cost involves because reverse vasectomy still does not guarantee that a man can get a baby again. Statistic has shown that only about half of reverse vasectomy procedure produced the desired result.

So in case you have decided to do a family planning via vasectomy, you should consider properly and think carefully because it might cause you to be permanently unable to bear your own child again and you will be forever stay in a state of childless.
