How to care for a dog

by Bonnie Martin

There is nothing cuter than a small, fuzzy little puppy, but you must ask yourself first, can I care for this dog? I work as an Animal Control officer in a major city, and every day I see animals that people can no longer care for. You owe it to this animal to be sure you have the space, the time and the money to be able to care for him properly; in today's world, love is not enough.

Every dog needs space and the outdoors. If you live in an apartment, think small. Possibly a dog that can be house trained to go in a spot in the apartment may save you both many bitter cold trips out in the snow. If you have a yard, get a doggie door so the dog can go in and out of the door at will. Do not expect your dog to live outdoors all the time, he wants to be part of the family too, and with your help he can learn how to act properly indoors. Do not leave your dog outdoors, or with access to the outdoors at night. In many parts of the country there are wild animals that prey on our small naive family pets. Shut that doggie door!

Your dog also needs your time. Take him for a walk daily, or just play with him indoors. Like children, they want some of your undivided time, and it will do your mind and heart good to give it to them. It is always fun to take your dog with you on outings, but never leave your dog alone unattended in the car. Cars can quickly get to 160 degrees, and your pet can die of heatstroke in a matter of minutes on a sunny day. Even though you think he would like to go on the car ride, think again, he is better off at home.

Money is something none of us seem to have enough of these days, but your pet will require some of it. All dogs need their annual vaccinations, and don't skimp on them. Not getting your dog immunized can lead to much more costly vet bills down the road, not to mention the pain and suffering for your dog. Your dog also needs a good quality food and regular grooming to stay healthy.

Check your city to find out if licensing is required in your area and make sure your dog is in compliance. Tags and microchips are also a must to be assured you will get your friend back if he happens to get lost. There are many dangers out in the world for your pet and you want him to be as safe as possible.

There is no better friend in the world than a dog, especially YOUR dog; this is a bond that is incomparable. When you have that kind of love for another creature you owe it to them to do the most you can for their health and welfare. If you have all the things that a dog needs from you, by all means go and get one. If you even remotely think that you may not have the time, space and money to care for this dog for a lifetime, than do both of you a favor and wait.
