Choosing your race and class (mostly class) is probably the most important part of making a character. How do you know if you should be a defender of the group, a striker to deal damage, or a supporter to make others stronger? That's what you need to do on your own.
If you follow the instructions in the players handbook, it tells you to choose your race then class. Personally I do it the other way around, which I find more convenient. If you would like to be the leader of the group you should choose a warlord or a cleric. A defender should be a paladin or fighter. Strikers are a rouge, warlock, or ranger. Supporters should be wizards.
LEADERS-
Warlord: The true leader of the group. Has great leadership to command others and has mass amounts of strength to deal tons of damage with mostly physical damage.
Cleric: Although a cleric might also be suitable for a supporter, clerics make great leaders to heal and using powers to improve your Allies attacks.
DEFENDERS-
Paladin: Very durable and tough to hold back enemies. With such high hit points and strength, paladins are able to wear the heaviest armor and use the best weapons to defend others.
Fighter: A strong hand to hand combat class, a fighter has to deal damage not only to win but to protect. Has the power to hold creatures off and weakening them for the strikers to make the kill.
STRIKERS-
Rouge: Meant to sneak into combat, deal a huge amount of damage and destruction to opponents, and flee before they take too much. Rouges are Very good at dealing damage but not as good at taking it.
Warlock: Warlocks' is a class that uses half dark magic and half melee and ranged attacks not only to deal damage, but also to put negative status affects on opponents to weaken them.
Ranger-A class that usually backs away from combat to pull out a super powerful crossbow or bow and arrow to deal a nice amount of damage to weaken and kill enemies. They are much smarter than they are strong.
SUPPORTERS-
Wizard: Wizards use many powerful spells to deal damage to an enemy and sometimes put a negative status's on enemies and positive ones on Allies.
Choosing a race is even easier to pick than classes. If you are a warlord you should be a proud, dragon-like Dragon Born, a mysterious, graceful Eladrin, an enthusiastic half-elf, or a sneaky, tricky Tiefling. A cleric should be a tough Dwarf, an Eladrin, or a quick and quiet Elf. If you are a Paladin, you should either be a Dragon Born, Dwarf, or Half-Elf. A fighter should be a Dragon Born or Dwarf. Rouge should be an Eldrin, Elf, a likeable, friendly, tiny Halfling,or a Tiefling. Be a Half-Elf, Halfling, or Tiefling if you are a Warlock. Rangers should be an Elf or a Halfling. Finally, if you're a Wizard, you should be an Eladrin.
*Note that these are only the races and classes from the players' handbook. There are more in the game.
*Note also that another race is a human which can excel at any class.
