Cabbages are considered to be cool (around 65 degrees Fahrenheit) weather crops that can be grown in an early Spring or late Fall season. They can be found in colors of Burgundy, deep Purple, Green, and dark Red. These vegetables prefer a rich fertile soil that is high in organic matter. Cabbage plants can grow up to 24 inches and the heads can weigh up to 16 pounds, depending on the variety. These plants grow best when planted in slightly raised beds that are enriched with a good quality compost. Cabbage seeds and/or plants can be found for purchase online, in feed stores, or at any nursery.

[Sowing or Transplanting]

Sowing can take place 10 to 12 weeks before the first heavy frost date is predicted or you can plant your seeds in peat pots (indoors) for an additional 5 week advancement. Buying an up to date copy of the Farmer's Almanac can be quite helpful in determining this. Start by tilling or plowing to a depth around 10 inches. Organic matter, compost, or mulch can be added at this time. Create slightly raised beds that are about 18 inches wide. Space your plants or seeds 24 inches apart. Seeds (3 at a time) should be placed 1/2 inch deep intothe ground and water until the ground is moist. Do not over-water the beds. If you do, the seeds might wash away or eventually rot.

[How to Grow and Maintain]

Continue keeping the beds moist and try to avoid over-watering them. Over-watering them can cause a fungus and/or a disease to develop. Cool days and nights usually cut down on the chances of your plants contracting a fungus but it is still possible. Insects and worms are usually not that popular in cooler temperatures. If you should see any change or slight damage to the leaves, it's time to use a good pesticide and/or fungicide that is made for vegetables. The dosage and amount can usually be found on the package or the container it came in. Routine treatments of a basic fertilizer like 13-13-13 is perfect for growing cabbages.

[Days to Maturity]

Maturity is usually reached between 67 and 105 days, depending on the type.

[Harvesting]

Harvesting can be done when the heads are full and mature. Sometimes the heads can be removed at earlier stages of growth. Remember, the longer you wait, the bigger the head will get.

* Interesting Fact

The Walking Stick is considered a headless cabbage plant that can reach to an amazing height of 15 feet and resembles a tree.
