Effective study habits for college students

Studying for college is not as hard as it might initially seem. College can be overwhelming at first with several classes and a whole new atmosphere. As long as you have a plan and stick to it studying for classes can be easy, although it may be time consuming. Start college off right with good study habits and effective time management. Following a few simple tips can help keep you on track.

1. Go to class.

This may seem like an obvious tip but it is really important. Many college students have a hard time handling the sudden freedom that comes with college. Going to class and paying attention during class is one of the most important things that you can do. Take notes during class and be involved with any discussions. Just being attentive will really help you retain knowledge as well as knowing what it is important to study.

2. Do all the assigned Readings and Take notes.

Reading and taking notes is an essential skill to have in college and will help you to retain knowledge from what you have read. Also take notes on any thoughts or questions you might have while you are reading and then bring them up during class or just to the teacher. They will appreciate your attentiveness and take note of it.

3. Re-write class and reading Notes later.

Although it may seem like a waste of time one of the best things you can do to retain information is to rewrite your notes. The act of writing stuff down helps your brain to retain information better than simply trying to memorize information.

4. Make note cards and take them everywhere with you.

If you have your note cards with you all the time you will get more studying in. There are often times when you are waiting for class to start or killing time before a group meeting and these are great times to pull out your note cards and go over them.

5. Start papers or projects early.

The earlier you start a project the better it will be. This also gives you time to write or do a rough draft and then go talk to the teacher about it. Many college professors are more than happy to go over papers and help you improve your writing. This will really help you to understand what the teacher wants as well as what you need to do to get a good grade on that paper.

6. Get groups together to study

Studying in a group (as long as you actually study) is a great way to get information firmly planted in your head. Often discussing a topic makes it stick better than simply trying to memorize facts.

The most important thing is to figure out what works for you and stick with it. Also don't be afraid to get help and talk to your classmates.
