Generally we've noticed a trend of video game movies flopping (like, for instance, Doom).
Doom, as most everyone would agree, is one of the best games known to man (and some games that we've not discovered yet.) However, the action-adventure flick starring Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, didn't quite live up to its name. Nor did it live up to being the first third person shooter MOVIES. Don't get me wrong, I think the Rock can act, I even liked Walking Tall, but really, was he the right choice for Doom? Probably not.
On the other side of the spectrum, we have the first Mortal Kombat movie. From my experience, I've found it to be one of the best video game movies in that it had a comprehensible plot as well as mediocre acting (which is more than I can say for the Mario movie - but we'll discuss that later.) I liked the movie enough to buy it, which says a lot. I can't quite say the same for its sequel, though. The movie had the same characters from the game, with a semi-new plot. It basically took the games, and our fantasies, and merged them to make one super-awesome being (that never got enough credit.) I mean, it even had REAL actors, like Kevin Michael Richardson and Bridgette Wilson!
On the other hand, we have one more strong argument AGAINST making video game movies... Its name is Super Mario Bros. Starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo, it definitely was not one of the better movies I've seen. Even if you forget the video game part, it was easily one of the worst movies ever made. Ever. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a Mario movie (try again, please!) but honestly, John Leguizamo as Luigi? I think not. I love him, I think he is honestly one of the finest actors of this or any time. I mean, he made To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar worth watching. But on the other hand, why, WHY, would you cast him as Luigi? I just don't understand how that seemed like a good idea. Bob Hoskins, on the other hand, might possibly be the best choice for Mario. Even now, probably twenty years later. Besides, where was Peach? They jerked her out and put Daisy in instead. Lame!
There can definitely be good video game movies, like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, the Pokemon movies... But then there are movies like BloodRayne, Max Payne, or the Tomb Raider movies. All that being said, I am looking forward to the new Prince of Persia movie (despite horrible casting and probable bad acting/dialogue/directing.)
So, long story short, so long as Uwe Boll doesn't make any more, keep 'em comin'!
