Setting: A bus station in a small town. A father and daughter are sitting as they wait for her boarding to begin.
Henry: I am so proud of you. (He puts an arm about her and hugs her close.)
Reba: I just don't understand why the only college that would grant a scholarship has to
be so far away. (She avoids looking at her Dad to hide the tears.)
Henry: Things work the way they should. I will miss you but your Mother's watching
and she is so proud of you. Just like me.
Reba: If she hadn't have gotten sick you wouldn't be alone. (She wants to say more but
as she looks at his chest she stops and bites her lip, She gasps and covers her
mouth with her hand.)
Henry: I know. I've known for awhile. (He strokes her hair.) I won't be alone for long.
Reba: I'll stay and somehow..
Henry: You'll do no such thing. You've earned this and it's your path. Pumpkin, you
can't stay. The Lord wouldn't have given you this opportunity if it wasn't
meant to be. Stay your course. You'll be a great doctor.
Reba: I'm not sure there is a God. First Mom, now you're sick. And I have this thing
in me that let's me see what's wrong inside of people. (Tears are beginning to
come down her face,) I've prayed and prayed. He hasn't answered me. .
Henry: Maybe you just don't understand the answer.
Reba: Mom would be mad at me for saying that. (She wipes at her face)
Henry: No. (He shakes his head) And God isn't either. You need to get away from
here, Pumpkin. At least for awhile. Learn how to heal what you see. You will
be some people's only hope and the answer to their prayers.
Reba: I've never been able to save anyone. Aunt Fran didn't believe me when I told
her and look what happened. I'll stay, marry Sam and ,
Henry: I'll die anyway. You'll have the training to back up your diagnosis. Besides you
were three when you told poor Franny. Couldn't even pronounce it. (He
chuckles under his breath)
Reba: Don't make me laugh. Why can't I have your gift? You saved Sally from
marrying Dan, told her she'd meet someone at church. She's so happy now
and you had a lot to do with it.
Henry: I saved her some sorrow. Hard times she wasn't meant to have. It doesn't
happen all the time.
